Old Kona questions:

Retro Newbie
Got an early Lava dome, 89 or 90 maybe as an encouragement to get back into shape.

Will post pics soon though it is very rough.

has a mix of suntour/shimano/lego/sticklebricks on it masquerading as a groupset which i intend to change ( even though i seem to recall kona's with a mix ).

Main reason for doing so is just its old/worn and clapped out/rusted/chipped/knackered.

Suspect about the fitted seatpost diameter, as it takes a very tight clamp to stop it moving.

Also a little suspect are the rear chainstay's, with one showing identical paint cracks on both sides ( chain side, so may have been an attempt to cut off a chainstay protector at one time. will know better when its degreased/degunked.

I would have posted a pic in this message but it dont let you do that on your first post.

PS: I did have questions but the pic not posting threw me :))

mostly to do with what groupset/wheels it originaly came with.

Will post up other pics when i get round to doing anything with it.

Let's be honest, that is a work of art.

Just give it a 0.2 bigger seatpost, old cranks and tyres, change nothing else and ride it would be my advice

Nice, I sold a smaller one identical to this a while ago, and not in as good looking condition as this.

Have a look in the catalogues section of this site to see what would have been on it originally if you want to "restore" it.

I think you'll find that most of the bits will be more expensive to source than the bike would be worth though.

It would look very nice with a sympathetic "modified" look from the period though.

Thanks very nice (in the pics) ditto above, just a little bit of tinkering and you have a lovely bike...or you could sell it to me?

Has a lot of potential ! Looks shiney :D I had one Brand new in 1990 but in Red, Had Suntour X1 Groupset with the xpress shifters. Was one of my fav bikes.

Keep it retro and you will have a very desirable classic.

Very nice.

Shame about the seatpost slipping a bit. Does anyone have the definitive knowledge on seatpost sizes for Konas?

I'd say 26.6 or 26.8mm for that one.
Though mine seem to be a random assortment of 27.0 and 27.2mm.

94 Cindercones are 26.6,
96 onwards seem to be 27.0 (thumb logo on rear of seat post)
2000 alloy frames are 27.0

I seem to recall that the earlier ones were 26.4 but not 100% sure
