odd number bearings in front hub...eh?

So my front hub is appart for first time in 25 years and it had 10 bearings in one side and 9 in the other....?

Whats that about? Is it normal? Cant think it would be.

I was working on a mat and being careful, i didnt lose one. No debris in the hub to suggest one shattered, and the others are all in good condition, checked with micrometer/vernier.

Factory mistake? One turned to powder? Genuinely correct?

If Shimano they should have 3/16th front (11 per side), 1/4 back (9 per side). I think.

I think M900 have 22 and most of the others have 20, rears all have 18 don't they?

Yes, most Shimano front hubs have 10 x 3/16th inch on each side.
9 x 1/4 inch bearings each side for the rear hub.

If one bearing has gone missing then check inside the hub shell. They sometimes fall through when being assembled or disassembled.
If the bearings are rough then it is possible that the missing bearing has disintegrated. This will destroy the bearing races and cones too.
I've seen it happen and it's not pretty.

If it's all smooth and clean then it may just be a manufacturing anomaly, or more likely, they have at some point been taken apart and put back together minus one.

No bearing inside the hub, all is very smooth, iv owned the bike from new and never dismantled hubs.

Must be manufcturing then.

they can go missing when taking them apart without you knowing.

What hub is it (and if shimano and there is a M123 style number on it even better.)

Not sure on the hub, ill check.

Cannot see t going missing, i have a coloured tarpaulin down to work on which is turned up at the edges to form a tub, and there simply isnt a bearing in there. Have looked and felt, nothing. They are even easy to see against its colour.
