Looking at the spec for a Pashley Picador, they use Sturmey brakes, rim on the front and hub n the back, which is why I posted that link.

Might be worth approaching the dealer I linked to, Brilliant Bikes, to see if they can help.

Our Picador has rim and hub brakes on the front. Nothing on the rear.

The two brake levers are different. Still it is interesting that SA make rim brakes.
Thanks for all the input - it seems this is a problem particular to Pashley, and not a general one as I had assumed; how surprising.

Is there any way that you could fit a sleeve over the existing barrel to make it longer, or would that increase the diameter too much to fit through the holes?

This company make cables and bits for vintage motorcycles. They might have something that could be made to work:

LOOSE BARREL NIPPLE 8mm O.D. x 13mm

Venhill are usually pretty helpful so maybe give them a ring. They also do a sleeve that fits over a 6mm barrel resulting in a barrel of 8mm x 9mm. Perhaps that would work with the cable you bought ... ?
