As most of you are aware, several of us here have and use or are trying to fit early hope c2's to our steed's.
I have the frame adaptor that allows any IS calliper to be fitted, possible its a 2nd Gen hope No2 calliper[But without the calliper bit]
Perfect as i can upgrade from C2 to a modern open system.
But i like/love C2's and dont really have any experience outside the C2 model,so i've bought 3 bikes worth in the hope i can renovate at least a bikes worth out that lot :?
After buying spare seals and attempting to completely strip and clean the C2's , i found it to be an expensive occupation and even at the end of it the brakes still had some faults and didnt operate as i remember they did BITD

So after much heartache i decided to flog the lot off on ebay spare parts and all, then use those funds to finance a new set of something like Oro 24's ,avid 7's,that kind of price range, say £240 tops

I looked after My C2's BITD and they performed fantastic for years[about 6 before i sold them],new pads when needed,a fluid change every 2 yrs and constant cleaning after nearly every ride and always after off road use.
The ones i got from ebay and tried to renovate were in shocking condition and looked like they'd had a sad and hard life with little or no loving tenderness lavished upon them.

There is one of the online bike shops that has New and unused C2's still in their boxes
Total cost for front No3 and rear No5 on pro levers would cost £235[i think the rotors are included]

Should i lose the modern discs option and buy these older but brand new unused C2's
[and they look better on a cobbled together disc mount that some equally high end modern brake

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH
The decision is driving me head round the twist

Anyone got any opinions on this, that would help me decide :?

Can you compare performance wise against new systems?

I had some C2`s that were good compared to rims

Then had some 1998-ish Formulas that were much better than the C2`s

Latest steed has some avid ultimates that are out of this world!!

If you are not interested in being period correct id go for newer systems? :?

Its not just the old or new ,its the whole Open versus Closed systems.
I just feel the open system that these modern brakes use, looks maintenance hungry and the lack of pad adjustment makes me think they will have pad dragging on the rotor problems.
Plus the levers all have frail looking adjusters.
The C2 adjuster which was a big metal knob on top and looked impossible to snap off.
You never have a drag problem as use can easily dial the pads 1/2 a mill off the rotors highest point.or set them back but 4-5mm.

can anyone convince me the modern ones are drag free and will last ages between servicing
I keep reading reviews on constantly needing to bleed and readjust the pad spacing :? and its these reviews that are putting me off

I have the original Hope 1st gen lever
Is that the sport lever that had the 5 point adjuster compared with the later thumbwheel looking cap :?

Arent those the open levers :?

The open system didnt sell too well back then and was plagued with problems.I guess thats partly why im put off modern open systems
And some of these issues appear to still be a problem

er, they 'o' is actually the calliper number - 3 was what you could see, these were the long life virtually maintenance free jobbies. I ran the black callipers for years

In my experience of Hope over the last 15 years, even the good stuff is hit and miss.

If I were dropping £240 on some new anchors, I'd go for the ones that are warrantied and have spares readily available.

Fair Comment Paul
Sensible thinking.

Im in negotiations with hope over them getting my order wrong 3 times,up at managerial level now
Im so tempted to buy the C2's and send them direct to hope for a warranty service.
