I've noticed that a couple of Tiago's 'NOS' Marins (he's listed 4 so far) had RM17s fitted.....and the other two with UKAI UMT-17 rims :shock:
Who on earth are Ukai?....as I've not come across them before. :|

Are they Araya's long lost twin brother??? Is the UMT-17 rim comparable to RM-17?

Ukai was the other big Japanese rim manufacturer. They're a bigger name in BMX than in MTB, but they had a substantial OEM business making rims for Specialized, among others.

I don't know anything about the UMT-17, but here's a nice picture I googled up: Gary Fisher holding aloft a pair of gold Ukai hoops in 1979:

My old '91 had RM-20's and still got the back wheel in the shed? RM-400's were on the '92 again they're in the shed too

Looks like a standard (huge) early mtb with small wheels and BMX bars. Maybe to make it fit the rider - she looks quite short. I guess if it is purpose built maybe there weren't many around back then and most of them large? But I'm only guessing from looking at the pic - maybe others will have a better idea?

I have rm17s too on my team (canadian issue)
