Northern Lights?

Dr S

Old School Grand Master
On Sunday there was a huge magnetic eruption detected that involved most of the northern hemisphere of the sun.
The joint NASA/ European Space Agency (ESA) solar and heliospheric observatory, a mission sitting at the L1 point between the Earth and the sun, also spotted a large coronal mass ejection heading in the direction of Earth at speed; travelling 93 million miles which might hit on Tuesday or Wednesday.
So, if you live in the North of Scotland you might want to keep an eye on the sky over the next few nights. It's one of natures great wonders.

around May 1990 the Northern Lights were visible as far south as northern Italy.

If I look from my house north, I catch a glimpse now and again, last lot about 6 years ago

?? the sun is at a distance of 93 million miles, at the speed these things travel it would arrive a lot sooner than that I would have thought?

''Light from the sun takes roughly 8 minutes to reach the earth traveling, of course, at the speed of light. Therefore you can say the sun is 8 light minutes away from the earth...''

That doesn't mean that the solar storm is travelling at the same speed as light though.

Light travels at 671,000,000 mph or about the same speed as someone from Barnsley cashing a giro.

I will be hitting tescos tomorrow to stock up on essentials, then while you lot stand around and watch the prurty light show I will under the bed wearing my welding mask! I saw the day of the triffids and they won't take me without a fight :?
