No pressure

imo Uni has been far too accessible and lazy ass'd school-leavers used it as an alternative to getting a job.

Many going for a degree in wallpaper or something equally ridiculous.. and dropping out before the end after a few years on cold beans, too many drugs and too much alcohol.

Obviously with exception.... ;)

:D so true

I'm just bitter because I had sponsorship to go to Uni in 1982, turned it down and got myself a job instead...

That and I've watched a few folk drop in and out of uni, apparently on a whim, having resided in a Young Ones type house share and imbibing cast amounts of alcohol and drugs

The problem with education in this country starts well before university age.

My wife is a teacher doing one to one lessons for teens who have fallen behind. She currently has 14 year olds with the reading and writing ability of a five year old. The government is paying to teach these kids who sit there with an attitude and refuse to work (and that's if they turn up).
What is the point? Across the hall they are 'teaching' the same kids Latin FFS!

So why waste public money on these kids? We have a shortage of skilled labour in this country- plumbers, electricians, brickies, mechanics etc are in short supply in parts of the country. Why not take these kids who are never going to shine in an academic sense and teach them these hands on skills? There are loads of empty industrial buildings sat around- use them to teach them a trade. These kids could then go on to better themselves- I know builders and plumbers that are still taking home £1000 a week even in these troubled times. Give them an opportunity to stay away from giro culture. It would save the country millions in the end.

The problem with government and politics is that the show is run by educated, well off middle upperclass White males ( with exceptions of course) and they have absolutely no idea anymore about the reality of living in Modern Britain. Who on earth decided that to teach council estate kids from Tyne and Wear Latin was a good idea?

The mind boggles

HERE HERE DRS

The labour party decided it was a good idea.....to make their unemployment figures look good of course

Oh and clockworkgaz, you have made a lot of scathing generalisations there  I am not a fan of such talk
Mayhap you are one of "us" if not which one of those groups do you fit into :?:

Do it.... Then I don't have to bite at the rich get richer/poorer get poorer/repeal the hunting act/EU sceptic/keep the pound/"loony left" callers/blame the Labour party/thatcher lovers on this board. Especially for the Mail, Telegraph and Sun readers amongst the community.
