Nipples

I have built wheels before cyfa yes  and my bro, dan,is at the blue oyster bar tonight ....shaved his legs and everything....dont tell anyone on any live forum pages or anything though  mums the word

They're not unsafe. The threads just seize onto the spoke at some point in the expected lifetime of the wheel and you don't find out till it's too late to salvage the spoke.

HOWEVER.....

DT Pro-lock nipples. They have a locking compound that still allows for readjustment. I have them on my Hope/Mavic UST wheels. They are the exception to the rule. But they are also quite expensive.

yes they are expensive!

what about normal ones which have a tiny bit of grease to prevent corrosion?

I'm going to swap out the brass nips on a wheel and don't see a problem. Use anti seize not grease and they'll be fine. The purpose though is for light weight not robustness.

Hey Cyfa, if you want red nipples so much get thee down to a piercers and get 'em both done, they have got to have some use, and guess what, training bars are titanium.
