Nipples

Nipples. Alloy ones.

Would never use them myself. Never had anything but problems with them.

And so we got back to where we started.

I would like red spoke nipples also, but am suspicious of aluminium alloy for wheels, I also have heard much about them, light and pretty they may be, but, hey, they are under a lot of tension and tension that varies as the wheel goes around, so me, i kind of don't trust them. So, it will be plated brass then, or stainless steel, if nipples are available in that material.

but as to colouring other materials, well, there are a few chemical plating materials on the market, have a look at what is out there, black should be easy to obtain. Red, h,mm, I wonder, copper plating perhaps or lead oxide.

I will have a look in my college research notes, plenty of info in there on plating and other surface treatments.

oh, I think you can get red dyed titanium.

I've found it's down to the wheel builder. A good builder can build a good wheel no matter alloy or brass.
I have noticed that many builders run a mile if you mention alloy nips.
Plus they are 20 grams per wheel lighter.

I've found more bad builders than good :x

We used alloy nuts  on our fishing boat as opposed to brass,to secure our fishing net winch to the iron bracket, the alloy nuts were a similar strength to brass, which was quite surprising to me,same torque to tighten them was used as well.......and they were anodized to protect them from the salt air a bit... 8)

Building them's the easy bit.

Truing them when they're bent after 2 salty danish winters is another thing altogether.

i dont want them to be too expensive

cannondale king says its easy peasy and i know he has a lot of wheel building eperience. besides, if they were that unsafe, surely they wouldnt be on the market :?

i wont be touching the wheels myself, i dont tamper with them as im no good at truing etc.
