Newbie Marin Bike Help

Those shifter/levers won't work. They are designed for V-brakes and pull a different amount of cable to the cantis you have fitted and they'll either no exert enough pressure or be like and on/off switch. You either need to convert to V's or get a different set of levers and to be honest those Acera ones are awful. Have a look for some used Deore LX ones for Cantis which come up fairly often for less than £20, they are much nicer and will more importantly work with your brakes.
If it was me I'd be looking to move the whole bike towards a Deore LX setup as it's period correct, nicely made, functions well and doesn't cost the earth.

I did up one of these for my dad for Xmas, turned out quite nice in a simple sort of way. If I can offer any advice it's probably to be a bit patient and get the right parts first time - although you may have already learnt that the hard way! (sorry)

Re:

should do and you might spend a bit more but youve learnt as you go along and you can say youve built yer own bike :D

They'll work but I would have had a look at the classifieds on here as you could have landed a full used Deore LX setup (or maybe even XT) which would have been period correct on the bike for the same money and would have had a much nice build with less steel/plastic more lighter alloy construction. Might be worth a look and see if you can do better and use the returns policy to send the new stuff back?

I my self am quite a newbie to the 'retro' bike world but I'm loving it so far. I have no money what so ever (on a gap year) so all my bike bits come from scrap/online ads for unwanted bikes etc. So far I spent £28 on a new cassette/chain and bottom bracket but here is my wonder of a bike. If you have lot of time and patience you can build great stuff.

This photo even though about a week old is now totally out dated, new chain, cassette, seat, stem, bar ends and front wheel. Looking for a old Deore mech of some sort now to level it out.

Keep pushing with this one and it will be a sweet ride!

You can get full sets of Jagwire inner and outer gear AND brake on eBay for under a tenner, lots of nice colours too 8)
