in the 1980s when I went from 27 1/4 to 700c on my Carlton, the front wheel was a sprint from a mate at the cost of a pint, it's nothing fancy, Normandy large flange hub with a mavic sprint rim - the non grey anodised version of the GP4 I think, well still got it but the tub is shot (or at least don't trust it or the glue) so need a new tub at least, probably Vittoria Rally but I'm not a big fan of tubulars, never really 100% sure I've stuck it on properly and in fear of punctures (although only ever had one on it). The rear is the one I had built in 1986, a Normandy large flange free/fixed flip flop hub, 40 spoke laced to a mavic MA2, the clincher non anodised version, so sort of matches, so my choices (1) new tub and all the hassle of glue on my old wheel or (2) a replacement front 700c wheel without the tub hassle but how easy and cheap to get something appropriate ?

any thoughts anyone on a cheap solution ?

If you are going to ride on tubs then I would recomend the Conti Gatorskin sprinter of the Rally's. those cheap tubs are not a puncture resistant or as round as a more expensive tub. The Gatorkin tub seems pretty tough ad durable. I was out on them today riding over all kinds of sharp crap and the puncture fairy stayed away and it has done for while on these. I have tried the cheap tubs like the conti Giro and Rally and they have been awful. the only thing I got from them was how to use glue.

No need to remove the old glue from your wheel. re activate it with a new layer of mastik one and put a layer on the stretched tub and mount, then partially inflate and centre the tub. Then inflate to full pressure and leave for 24 hours and ride. Really it is not a hassle and doing this the tub will be secure.

The rear tub on my Alan and Pinerello currently are a spares I fitted at the road side last year. There was just a layer of glue on the spare tub that had been folded up for a while on the bike. Those tubs are so securely fitted I have not bothered removing them.
