My passat is no longer mad

Well, the covenience control unit is fubar - cleaned the terminals, no signs of water ingress but still doesnt work properly - someone with a Golf with the same issues:

bout a month ago the alarm kept going off as soon as you pressed unlock on the remote, in the end I disconnected the siren, thinking it may be the internal batteries failing and intended to replace it.

Days afterwards the alarm LED on the door kept flashing after the car was unlocked (but stopped flashing with another press of the remote) - (occasionally only had one door opening before the other - as if selective unlocking was enabled) - however after a drive the locking behavior seemed fine.

Over the past 2 weeks the remote 99% of the time will not work at all, to open the car I use the key in the lock (both doors unlock and interior light comes on), then have to press unlock on the remote (while key is in the door) to stop the alarm LED flashing.

Very occasionally after a drive (i.e this morning) the remote does work. or maybe when the cars been in the sun, and the car unlocks and unarms perfectly.

All this kind of stuff makes me seriously consider going back to owning a Morris Minor....all you need is a nail and a stone to fix one of them! :D

resoldered crappy dual layer circuit board - bending the board slightly, problem goes away - let go of the board and click go the relays

FIXED.

£24.99 pattern part and all my worries are gone.

New water pump fitted too.

MAP sensor - turbo pipework

tried all sorts of places , got all sorts of explanations and it was my local mechanic who lives 3 doors away who told me what it was after he took it for a spin after replacing the water pump.

it hides under the engine cover so is not an obvious thing to see.

Probably not much to see anyways. Pressure / MAP sensors tend to be reasonably robust, really - the pipework to / from, can degenerate over time, though, causing problems.

MAF sensors, on the other hand, seem to have a reputation that precedes them, for fragility ;-)

took it out for its 1st 12 hour shift last night - its bloody bonkers

its supposed to be around 130 bhp but it feels much quicker - I've owned a few properly fast cars and this feels like it would give a good effort against most fast rep mobiles.

and it still returned 47mpg around town...

Question: how would I know if it had been 'chipped' by somebody else before I bought it?

If you have access to VAG-COM you can log the MAF figures. At wide open throttle a 'standard' car will give a pretty well defined value to within a few g/s, a remapped one will read significantly higher.

I don't know off the top of my head what a typical value is, but it's not hard to find.

There's even a calculation to estimate BHP from peak mass air flow, but the relationship isn't linear and the accuracy is highly debatable.

If you don't have access to VAG-COM, then you could get it dyno'd on a rolling road for around £50, but for that you could buy a decent VAG-COM cable and have change.
