My bike is being naughty

I had a craking bike a couple of weeks ago. Very embarissing to ride. When the ride was over I put it in the stand and changed the worn BB bearing but ti still creaked. It turned out after checking everything to the rear Q/R skewer. A dab of oil on the cam made it silent again.

Mmm...found it!

1. The magic link was jumping in the mech cage. Removed it and turned it around, bingo, no jumping. How bizarre. Put a new one on just in case.

2. The very low miles ceramic Hope bottom bracket which felt fine when I removed the cranks and felt the bearings by hand continued to bother me as the probable cause for the another 'clunking' I experienced.
This time I removed the BB and replaced with an XT BB I have hanging around. Bingo...smooth running. Not at all impressed with the Hope

My SX was creaking like a b*tch a few weeks ago. I cleaned and regressed to bb threads, crank axle god knows how many tiles, removed and regreased the pedals, cleaned and greased the headset, plus greased loads of other bolts but it still didn't help. So was convinced it was the bb.

Just before swapping the bb, I had the drive side crank on my work bench fiddling with something and I discovered that it was my chain ring creaking! A spot of grease on between it and the cranks and on all of the chain ring bolts has solved the noise.

which way round did you install the quick link?

I have a theory that it is best to fit it so the closed end is at the front on the inner side of the chain i.e. the closed end is the end that would rub on the cassette teeth first when pedalling.

Ah...fitted new BB bearings, stripped, cleaned and lubbed everything, new X0 rear mech and shifter...runs like a dream again. Happy days
