Your hand speed is a big thing. Very specific to you.
There is a guy at work who welds very well but has really quick hand speed, if i ever take over from him on a job he's halfway through i have to spend about 10 mins altering his setttings until i'm happy at my speed.

Have a go at braizing if you can, its like therapy i'd advise having a chat with the eldest lecturer, he won't be able refuse passing on his skills

I spent 8 weeks of evening classes gas welding a butt joint......not with as much success as I would have wanted!
