The website now says:
“It’s 1995 frames and earlier that count for this category. The kit on the bike does not have to be original but there will be more credibility the more retro the bikes. V-brakes are certainly to be frowned upon. Each bike will have to be passed by Grant Taylor or his helper Gus (from Retro Bike) for vetting as to its age and spec. We invite would be retro bikers to email us at [email protected] with a pic of what they will be riding. We’ll then add this into a dedicated Retro Area where everyone can check out your hound. Ask in the forum if you need help knowing if your bike qualifies.
At 11am there will be a ‘Retro-Dog’ parade for all those wishing their Hounds to be judged.
The winner will be announced on the start line at 12pm with prizes later in the day.
As far as Retro category goes we currently list ‘open’. I think you have it right that you can Retro in any race but for Prizes and glory you have to do the Solo 6hr. However I think most retro fans will want to bash round on rigid forks with crap brakes in the OneDer dog racing. For those doing the OneDer dog on retro bike then again there should be prizes for the fastest laps.”
[OneDer dog is a one-lap ‘race’ involving unlimited tea and cake that you enter on a pay-as-you-go basis]
Out on the trail the other day, I bumped into Irene Lachner, who is the better part of last year’s mixed pairs winners. She seems to be involved in some way and was very keen to encourage retro bike entries. I pointed out to her that the website didn’t explain it very well and she said she’d get it clarified, but I don’t know if the above is a response to that.
Cutting the crap, it seems to amount to there being only two reasons why you would want to enter as a Retro Bike rider, either you are going to do 6 hours solo on a bike with cantis, or you want to enter your bike for some kind of ‘concours d’elegance’ separate to the actual race.
Other than that it seems to say that retro bikes are allowed to be entered in other categories, which doesn’t seem very remarkable, and presumably then you could use Vs as you wouldn’t have to subject your bike to Wu Tangled’s searching scrutiny. But then you wouldn’t enter as retro anyway, as it would just cost you more.
My friend who did the pairs last year says it was a very tiring course and he wouldn’t fancy six hours solo.
