MTB race in Brighton - with a retro category

The website now says:

“It’s 1995 frames and earlier that count for this category. The kit on the bike does not have to be original but there will be more credibility the more retro the bikes. V-brakes are certainly to be frowned upon. Each bike will have to be passed by Grant Taylor or his helper Gus (from Retro Bike) for vetting as to its age and spec. We invite would be retro bikers to email us at [email protected] with a pic of what they will be riding. We’ll then add this into a dedicated Retro Area where everyone can check out your hound. Ask in the forum if you need help knowing if your bike qualifies.
At 11am there will be a ‘Retro-Dog’ parade for all those wishing their Hounds to be judged.
The winner will be announced on the start line at 12pm with prizes later in the day.

As far as Retro category goes we currently list ‘open’. I think you have it right that you can Retro in any race but for Prizes and glory you have to do the Solo 6hr. However I think most retro fans will want to bash round on rigid forks with crap brakes in the OneDer dog racing. For those doing the OneDer dog on retro bike then again there should be prizes for the fastest laps.”

[OneDer dog is a one-lap ‘race’ involving unlimited tea and cake that you enter on a pay-as-you-go basis]

Out on the trail the other day, I bumped into Irene Lachner, who is the better part of last year’s mixed pairs winners. She seems to be involved in some way and was very keen to encourage retro bike entries. I pointed out to her that the website didn’t explain it very well and she said she’d get it clarified, but I don’t know if the above is a response to that.

Cutting the crap, it seems to amount to there being only two reasons why you would want to enter as a Retro Bike rider, either you are going to do 6 hours solo on a bike with cantis, or you want to enter your bike for some kind of ‘concours d’elegance’ separate to the actual race.

Other than that it seems to say that retro bikes are allowed to be entered in other categories, which doesn’t seem very remarkable, and presumably then you could use Vs as you wouldn’t have to subject your bike to Wu Tangled’s searching scrutiny. But then you wouldn’t enter as retro anyway, as it would just cost you more.

My friend who did the pairs last year says it was a very tiring course and he wouldn’t fancy six hours solo.

If you read he info, the retro bikes have to be inspected by a official, to prove that they are retro, our very own Gus aka Wu-tangled !

How would Gus know a retro ride?? he doesn't have a retro bike

Here are the results of the equivalent race last year.
Edit to include link! http://www.timelaps.co.uk/assets/uploads/rev%202B08.htm

The lap was 6 miles. Last year it was solo, pair or team, but it seems as though this year the length is cut to six hours and a team is three rather than four. The retro category is new, so last year's results are no guide to that, but they only seem to be inviting solo entries for it, although the website isn't very clear.

! Anybody else think that Jo Burt who came who came third in the mens pairs is the same Jo burt of Mint Sauce fame??

Oh ye of little faith Tony!

I have no doubt whatsoever that such an honourable and upstanding man as Gus will be competing in the six-hour solo on a rigid retro bike with cantis (and original tyres). Doesn't his Stumpjumper qualify?

sorely tempted to enter, six hour ride or no. But I ride on canti's for no man woman or sheep. The frame qualifies, the brakes EVO II HS33's don't. It's just I have this obsession with stopping....

Surely Maguras are in the Retro spirit! Even EVO II HS33s.
I hope so, as I've put some on my Pace and am hoping to enter!

I'm not sure about HS33s, but HS22s were certainly out in 1995.

And I think the organisers are showing their ignorance about retro in 'frowning' on V-brakes. Although M739 is sometimes known as 96 XT, XT and XTR V-brakes were on so-called 1996 bikes and they went on sale in the autumn of 1995. Surely a completely original bike that you bought in 1995 should be eligible, V-brakes and all?
