MTB frame builders in UK? I'd like a custom built frame.

I've decided for my 40th (next May) I would like to have a custom frame built. It'll be a 29er, rigid singlespeed (maybe with geared options) - pretty much like my Surly Karate Monkey but better fitting and perhaps better tubing. I'd like a nice paint job too.

However - who to make it? I'm looking to spend good money (£1000-£1500 frame/forks).

My first thought was Rody (Groovycycleworks) - but with the distance I was concerned about correct sizing and 'feel' without being able to see them/it in person as it's being built. That and the 20 month waiting list. But I know I could trust him to do what I want I think.

How about in the UK though? Who is capable to understanding how MTB frames (particularly 29ers) should be custom built and what tubing to use to make it exactly how I want it? And is sufficiently close that I can get the right sizing etc.

There can't be many with that experience. Even Dave Yates hasn't really done many if any 29ers.

Any thoughts?

Your never 39

I dont know what chas roberts does if anything in 29er flavour ,, but to me one of the finest builders in this counrtry and off his time so I''d be having words.. :)

Yes Brian Rourke - but his was a road frame. It is quite handy and relatively local to me though (only 1 hr away). Would he know how to do a 29er?

Chas Roberts did come to mind - again has he done 29ers though?

spotted it at the same time. Liking that a lot. Wonder if his waiting list has gone up though after the TV programme

Chris Edison of Edison cycles. He an awesome frame bulider and top bloke. He built my 1st mountain bike I raced. Saw him at Sherwood pines the day of the Retrobike ride on his 20yr frame, still going strong. He's based in Clowne Derbyshire and won't have a website but may if lucky have a telephone. His road bike are stuff of legends! Go get measured and he'll make you an absolute beaut!!!
