Moyne freewheel removal

Hi. Is anybody familiar with removimg Moyne freewheels without any notches for a tool? I saw somewhere a photo of a pick-like tool that is used. Thank you. Dave.

It looks like that pick either goes in the hole in the front to lock up the freewheel mechanism, or on the back there’s a pair of slots that look like they line up and you slot in a pair of those picks. Then use a chain whip to loosen and remove.

It might be easier to see if the smallest cog comes off using two chain whips or a bit of chain in a vise. Then if you take the cogs off you’ll be able to take the freewheel mechanism off and then the centre bit in a vise.

I've got adverts for Moyne freewheels in Sporting Cyclist mags from the early 60's. These show the 'picks' slotting into the back of the freewheel but I can't emember anything about removal. I'll dig one out and scan it for you.

I had one of these freewheels back in the '60's. The 'picks' slide over the large sprocket and engage with the two recesses in the flange on the rear of the freewheel body. This locks the body as Jonny69 says and you take the block off with a chain whip. I bought the freewheel as you could fit a bigger bottom sprocket than was available on the Regina or Cyclo freewheels of the time, I needed help getting up hills even then!

Here we are - and with a Clement Tub bonus! The ad (from Feb '63 Sporting Cyclist) does say that the whole can be removed using the 'keys' (not 'picks') and a sprocket remover.
