more advice for a noob, wheels this time!

Dirt Disciple
hi all, for those of you that have seen my other thread about my skip find i think i have now found some wheels to go with it, i know nothing about wheels or indeed bikes so any help would be appreciated!

I have been offered a set of wheels, i thought they might be good for skippy, as the fuji has been named!

The wheels are mavic m231cd rims laced with unknown spokes to some deore xt hubs, they are not disk hubs, and i dont know what xt they are, i will try to upload some pics when and if i get them, the bloke wants 40 quid for the pair with some rather worn tyres on them, they run true from my cursory look but a few of the spokes on the rear wheel seem to have a slight bit more play in them than the ones on the front.

EDIT
Also they come with anodised blue qr skewers that seem ok but again i know nothing and an unknown 7 speed cassete that is worn but functional!

Basically to questions, is it expensive to have someone tweak the rear spokes or easy to do yourself?
AND
Are they worth £40 for the pair?

Any help greatly apreciated!!!

regards, keef

(The pricing bit should be in the what's my XYZ worth thread)

Price seems reasonable as long as the braking surface on rim's aren't worn out. Make sure that the nipples aren't seized otherwise it's a real pain. Also check whether they're 7 speed or 8/9 speed. EDIT: just reread your post, they're 7 speed.

Truing wheels is easy, you just need a spoke key and patience. My local bike shop charged me £15 to tension, re-dish and true a pair of wheels that were more warped than a very very warped thing, worse than I could sort out. Sheldon Brown offers great advice on how it's done.

Good luck

Have a look at the braking surfaces, if they show wear or not, and any play in the axles

I'd say of the top of my head that £40 is an ok price for mavic rims on XT hubs, but if the freewheel is worn, plus the spoke tension needs sorting, I'd try to get them for £30 :P It's hard to say without seeing them.

<edit> heh! i believe in fixies posted sayin' the same things as I did!! I'd agree with himas to getting them 'zeroed' by a good wheelbuilder, and sort any play that happens as you ride them yourself.
I'll say get them- a fair working bike is greater than the small amount of money mye might get the bits for.

thanks, stupid question but how do i tell what the breaking surfaces are like? the rim is black and it has rubbed off where the breaks have been in contact.
I apologise for asking wether they are worth it in the wrong section.

im sure he will be open to negotiation on the price, when i asked him what he wanted i got a "gotta be worth around £40" answer but he is a reasonable bloke who knows whats good for him if he wants to borrow my van anymore!! will try to get some pics if this helps?

anyone know anywhere in east yorks to get them "zeroed" then?

You'll be able to feel if there's any wear in the rim surface, you don't want a concave feel or deep step.

As for getting them tensioned and trued, any real bike shop will do that. Wheel bearings are easy to clean and re-grease if you have a set of cone spanners, again local bike shop if not.
