Monty Python (i could have told him that years ago)

In fact they were shit. A group of pompous uni student thinking they were being clever.

They were no comedy giants like Canon & Ball, Hale & Pace or the Chuckle Brothers.

You forgot the Grumbleweeds AND Russ Abbot!

Which in fact, pretty much describes every 'successful' comedy writing team.

Ever looked at the 'Footlights' Alumni list? Reads like a who's who of British comedy/drama for the past 25 years.

Python was ground-breaking and very original. Way ahead of its time and led the way for television comedy for decades. The like of Little Britain owe a huge debt to Python. If it wasn't for Python and Spike Milligan comedy entertainment would still be based on sexist racist homophobic stand up comedians churning out the same old garbage.

hello my names smoketoomuch..

wotnies red barrel...i could go on forever..

Well seeing as you mention one of the Goons...

I don't think Python were particularly ground breaking.

However, they turned the soil over pretty thoroughly, putting enough sheer genius in to the tilthe to ensure generations of rich harvests.

At their height, they were giants. You can only reach the heights if you risk the lows.

Jones is entitled to his opinion, and I am glad to hear it. Humility is an all too rare thing amongst the talented these days.

Who said he has been doing nothing these last thirty years? Living day to day life as a spoof daughter to our first female PM is no piece of cake.

When he, like Barry Humphries, steps out of his female alias to entertain the press we should take his words, like those of all working on the creative coal face, with a hefty doze of salt.

We would not be reading about it had he remarked, "Yeah, we were good weren't we?"

That encapsulates Python perfectly...

For the record, my favourite sketches are the Marriage Guidance counsellor (Carol Cleveland & THAT dress...) and Working class poet - "Tungsten carbide drills - what's bloody tungsten carbide drills!!"
