Modern rear mechs

What would your choice of modern rear mech be?

'Traditional' Deore, XT, XTR.. or SRAM.. Saint.. Shadow.. etc. etc..

Don't really understand the differences between them all (but some need different cables?)

Is the modern stuff that much better than the 80's/90's stuff?

I know this is 'REtroBIKE' but I like the idea of modern components on an older chassis...

SRAM mechs are either Shimano compatible or SRAM shifter only and are marked as such. SRAM is 1:1 or Shimano compatible 1:2

Modern mechs are in reality not much different to mechs from 1987 onwards. The earliest Shimano slant parallelogram mech will shift 9 speeds quite happily.

Personally I havent found any real difference other than weight. Deore mechs take a good bashing.

Somebody will come along and say otherwise I'm sure...

Been scrolling through the CRC list and the SRAM mechs LOOK lovely..

But so does 90's XTR only in a different way, modern XTR looks ace too.

But you read comments like 19XX XT rear, when they actually worked...

Are there models to avoid like the plague?

SLX - nearly the same weight as Xt and it just works, the whole groupset is damn good value and i now see little point in buying anything higher up.

i can get alivio and tourney mechs to shift just as well as my deore and sram x9. some difference is the way the are made, maybe materials too but from what i can gather theyre based on the same mechanisms

The SRAM's have got something going on in the style dept eh??

SRAM 3.0 with the red jockey wheel @ CRC for £17

And the ano on the X0's . . . . but £120...

Do you need the shifter matched to the mech with the SRAM stuff?

But an XT M771 for £40..... mmmmmmm

Sram rear mechs also dont jump about, over rough ground.
But i dont think mechs have improved to any great degree, modern versions seem more flimsy :?
I went for an XO over my usual XT/XTR choice ,mainly as they come apart and the spring is replaceable
I have plain old silver,no anodising, but at least its the CNC cage and not the crud carbon one[carbon, cant tell me it'll last like metal does :? ]

sram named stuff (attac, rocket, trx etc.) will work with shimano parts but not sram (unless its sram named again)
sram numbered stuff (x9, x.0, x7 etc.) works with sram only as its 1;1 acuation where as shimano is 2;1 actuation

My 2008 XTR rear mech is the best I've ever used.

Don't get on with Sram because of the feel of the shift. My pal agrees as he's just dumped his X7 gears for a STX/XT combo.

Is it right that you can use a 9-speed rear mech on a 7-speed setup?

What about a 7-speed on a 9-speed?
