modern Bikes?

There's far more variety and choice now than there ever was back in the day

50 kinds of bum-up, head-down rigid bikes in different colours is not variety

There are plenty of performance advantages to be found in modern bikes.

Most of them lack any character and soul though.

Couldnt agree more - "we have a choice of colours, black or black"

Sorry thats rubbish. Look at the Cotic Soul, any Singular, the new Stooge, Salsa, Surly, Stanton......and thats only the S's. All very colourful and have as much 'soul' as any dale, marin , saracen etc

Re:

I think the point has been made well, that you can go out and get a bike today representing just about any era of cycling according to your desire and taste. That really can't be a bad thing.

Well it is for people who want to get rid of their retro originals HF.....

But quite - my thoughts entirely. Just discovered this brand from Finland....
Pelago. Nice indeed.

Re: Modern Bikes

I love the idea of Retro Bikes and for me like many they remind you of another period in your life when maybe you had more time or maybe you raced etc..

Are they better?

Well the very best of today's bikes will be a quantum leap ahead of the very best of the 80s or 90s. The ride is better, the comfort, the reliability, the performance.

But cycling is not just about blasting around and looking at Strava it is also about how it makes you feel. It is also for me anyway the effect it can have on other people.

So maybe it has more to do with fashion and 'cool' that it has to do with the engineering after all how many retro components have you had fail compared to their modern counterparts.

Of course building the bikes is what it is all about for many including me. I think the analogy is similar to classic cars; how many classic cars do you see in every day use?

The same bike today :

Yes there may have been a few upgrades over the years, Yes ive painted the forks & stem black, But, ive never found any thing as reliable as this old yeti. i trust my life on it 8)

As for modern bikes, apart from some of the new Yeti's, ive yet to find some thing i really like.

Modern bikes : not for me. i think we strip the planet of enough resources as it is

Re:

Well this was all a nice read great topic!

I think its the under dog spirit with retro.
I've got friends who bang on about how you 'need' disc brakes to go for a ride off road and how v's are shiz.

Makes you want to prove them wrong as i was into xc bitd they just had bikes just to ride round on as teenagers.

I'd rather have a pack of Gold bars! ;)

Re:

Been through all the brakes. Cantis stopped, V's sropped, cable discs stopped, Maguras stopped (exiting to see the flex when you squeezed them) and hydraulic discs stopped. Discs were great for UK mud as did not clog up? Enjoyed riding whether they stopped or not.
I have tried all frame materials and my favourite is steel. I guess what I am trying to say is that I have been sucked up with the "must have the latest". I had my four children and 8 years later went for retro as I know it and remember them the best......and must be going through my mid life crisis! I honestly think there was more skill in riding a fully rigid bike, and like everything else today? Its about making things easier and more comfortable. Who wants reliability? It was all about the fun repairing your bike on the trail. Thumbies? What a godsend. When your gears went out of sink as your rear mech got caught? Switch to friction. What do you do these days, because although bikes may be reliable, trails are not. As a comparison, my 1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo was a blast to drive in the day, cars today? Boring!

Re:

Very true i think it takes more skill to ride a rigid down a trail rather than just smashing over everything on a full sus 29er!

I guess you'd pick up bad habbits starting out now on a full sus 29er.

Talking off brakes renault 5 turbo ones were a bit rubbish weren't they? It was prob more fun to drive cause you were more part of the action the noise of the engine, road noise etc cars are very clinical now. (Although i do like new cars).

Re:

There are more boutique bikes than ever and maybe more steel builders than ever today. The modern bikes get the knock for their carbon uniform look, but there are a lot of gems out there.

This is my modern rider. Its a 2011 Kona King Kahuna 29er I built myself. I spend most of my time on this. If the weather is nice on a weekend my retros come out, but this thing is a joy to ride.

I am also loving all the retro bits coming back. Skinwalls, rigids, simple 'speed options', and 90s colours.
