Smoothing out the ride spoils the fun, in my opinion.

Larger tyres and full suspension allow you to ride over gnarly stuff that you otherwise would walk over thus increasing the amount of fun, in my opinion:P

PS 50-559

Then it makes the other 95% not as fun!

So wtf! Why do we need all these wheel sizes? In my day (when I were a lad) it was 26". Done. Its like cars today where you need a load of different variants to fit in with the market. What is wrong with keeping it simple?

We don't need them, but the cycling industry had run out of other things to change and therefore make people spend money they didn't really need to.

It wouldn't surprise be if the larger retailers went all out for it to destroy the local bike shops as there is no way a already multi-discipline small bike shop can stock a range of 2 sizes of: tyres, inner tubes, rims, spokes, forks, frames etc etc.

</conspiracy theories>

I think most modern bikes are crap looking monstrosities.

I have very little interest in new designs and technologies in bikes.

I like old mountain bikes.

I have impeccable taste and enjoy a bicycle with a bit of individuality and charisma.

I am a retro bicyclist... I am very handsome too.

Are we supposed to decipher the truth from the fiction here?

I always find these threads slightly amusing, with the cynical hat on that all the new stuff is created by the evil manufacturers to fleece us of our money. I think we were worse BITD. How many of us bought things because they were 10g lighter or were purple or because Mint Sauce had one. Truth is its always happened and we've always drank the kool aid, really were those Ringle skewers that much better than the ones that came on your bike. And as for standards lets not forget that we had 1", 1 1/8", 1 1/4" headsets, which could be ahead or threaded, 68 and 73 mm bottom brackets with a whole host of lengths, seatposts in every diameter under the sun.

Re:

I always think of my Dualit toaster when these debates come up.

Had it twenty years, It's mechanical, It's shiny metal, It's repairable, It's beautiful, It's dependable, It's built by craftsmen, It's been a wonderful servant...

I could buy a plastic, digital, pop up, multi setting, stamped out far eastern tat toaster, but why the hell would I?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, some people still fancy Jordan, I imagine.

Once upon a time, the designs and technologies that result in your bike/s were new.

I also like old bikes, I like newer bikes too. I draw the line at disc brakes though!

I wouldn't say I have impeccable taste, but I like a nice fois gras sandwich every now and then! I also DON'T fancy Jordan

I too am a Retrobiker, as for handsome ,er . . . .

All of the above is just - allegedly - an observation you understand. It may or may not be the views of the poster.

Mike, perhaps .

I never really fancied the middle east, Italy's more my thing.

I'm certainly not against new bikes, like new cars etc... but give me my 47 years daily driver any day. New bikes have there place in the world, just not anywhere in mine.

ps I'm a miserable old man.

Re:

I was a miserable old man once , then I rekindled my mtbness , and now I'm a 25 year old again!
With a bad back. Rotten teeth. Dodgy hearing. Receding hairline. Nasal and ear hair growths that rival Amazonian rainforests and flappy skin!
But riding my 21 year old rigid mountain bikes has done the world of good to my bingo wings!
Some of this I may have made up, maybe. But probably not.

Mike
