Mobile phones and petrol pumps

What about 'taking it round the back'?

Mobile phone use at the pumps has been an irrelevance since we stopped using micro switches in the keypad. Now it's all thin film and inductive/pressure/whatever, there's nothing much left in a phone that can spark. Even a faulty phone won't spark, it'll just not work.
Old phones would spark and still work, so the user had no idea the phone was broken.

Also, pretty sure the vapour recovery on modern pumps has come on in leaps and bounds since the days of the 15 kilo mobile phone.

But it's law, nothing we can do about it.

It's a real worry, what with all those petrol stations being blown up. Probably better to ban electrical systems in cars, hmm, especially spark ignition engines. PMSL

Use of mobile phones when filling is in the highway code. So it's out of the stations hands.

Odd what you find when you're looking for something else.

Really?!
Aren't you on private land?

Google static electricity this can build up on car or person and ignite fuel fumes ..
LOL at needing to Google static electricity......

Yep rare that your going to explode filling your car up but it can happen. Probably never from using your mobile these days even if that was ever the case,

And? Lots of laws apply on private land.
And TBH the highway code in itself isn't actually a legal document, it's a collection of bits from a number of legal documents (road traffic act etc) and a load of sensible hints and tips for drivers. Hence the use of should (hints and tips) and must (legal requirements) in the HC.
I suspect that the mobile phone one is a must not, but having not read the HC for 10 years I have no idea (and little interest).
I know it's illegal here. And everyone does it anyway.
