Mobile Camera Units, Parking In The Sunset?

I think you'll find the best defence against being done for speeding is to stick to the limit. End of.

+1

If you're not breaking the law then it doesn't matter whether the camera is in plain sight or hidden behind a tree, does it..

At the risk of sounding like my mum, if you get done for speeding by a camera you didn't notice, then you still have nobody to blame but yourself.

I drive. I break the speed limits (who doesn't), but if I ever get caught then it's "a fair cop"... It's one of the risks all motorists take when they choose to flout the law.

I don't think it's getting caught that's the problem

it's the catchers breaking the rules to catch people breaking the rules then claiming breaking the rules is wrong.

However..put a speed camera outside every school...put a camera at every set of lights for jumpers and most would be okay with that

I reckon I will get away with the usual saying I can't remember who was driving, if it comes to it.

That loophole got closed last year by the EHCR as the case was one of the ones by a user on Pepipoo.
It's being challenged but currently they don't recommend that anyone takes that defensive route.

Carl.

Plus there are related offences you may get nabbed for. Ask Stoke City's Kenwyne Jones about that one. ;)

The way I see it is the stats show most drivers exceed the speed limit(s) at times.

Those that get caught, failed the observation / intelligence / savvy / attention / appropriateness test(s) for either not being observant enough (to spot the gatso / speed trap), not being savvy or sneaky enough to think where plod would try and catch drivers out, or were driving entirely inappropriately and were bound to get stopped.

There will always be the odd exception (luck, either way), but that's as I see it - be prepared to break the speed limit (in fairness as probably most drivers do) then accept higher standards of everything come to bear - and if failing that, you didn't pass the standards required, one way or another.

Should there be rules to stop plod being sneaky and hiding out in the bushes? Probably not.

That's not being holier than thou - it's merely pointing out that playing that game demands people up their game - if just following the crowd and getting caught, that's the price to pay for largely doing it to yourself.

I still chuckle when I think about the North Wales Police, who used a 'dummy' van parked in a layby, and then put the speed camera in another layby about half a mile up the road, hidden inside an empty horsebox.

Genius!

Thing is - I suspect we can condemn them for being sneaky - or realise, that it was an evolution of 80s politics that created this monster, and that the public largely acquiesced to it.

Now they probably play the game from the cards they are dealt. Treat them like a business, measure them like a business, and let's not be surprised or annoyed when they start acting like businesses.

I agree.

- The Police need money
- Speed Cameras generate money
- People continue to speed excessively*
- Speed Cameras catch such people speeding
- The Police generate more money as a result

And repeat as often as you like for as long as there are people out on the road who break the limits.

What 'business' wouldn't turn down easy money like that? None that I know of.

*most cameras have a tolerance of a few mph above the limit before a fine is issued to account for any inaccuracies, hence the 'excessive' speeding part.

N.Wales police are ace.. at a road safety meeting (something to do with acpo) one of their officers declared that for the year, the introduction of a speed camera had reduced road accidents by 100%

All sound great until one smart-ass asked how many there'd been in the previous year..

It still amazes me that people bitch and moan about speed cameras and getting caught speeding.
MAN. THE. F🤬🤬k. UP.
Everyone knows the speed limit. If you want to break the law that's fine, we all do it. But if you are stupid enough to get caught, don't moan, just man up and take the punishment.
People who try and weasel their way out of paying fines by saying the Police are in the wrong just really annoy me.

That's my tuppence worth anyway
