i have a old trek 6500 im planning on SS too, as a hack bike. its addictive and the fact there is barely any issues when its done is a bonus....no setting gears etc.
I'm considering a singlespeed myself, am I right in thinking that the above Hope hubs are the same as for a screw on cassette just dished differently for SS ?
Mine (blue one) is. It's an old conventional screw-on hub.
How to do it (assuming a bare hub)
1 Take off the end pieces (mine has a tiny allen grub screw on each)
2 Tap out the axle and one bearing
3 Remove bearing from axle
4 Refit the axle the other way round
5 Refit bearing and end caps.
6 Relace the wheel with left spokes on the right and vice versa.
You end up with a wheel with the dish the other way round (flat side is on the left). It works fine with a 107 ish mm bottom bracket (dependent on cranks) and gives a perfect chainline with the middle ring.
It's addictive. I built my first SS about a year ago, and I've since built two more. I'm expecting my first dedicted SS frame any day now...
I just can't be arsed to fit gears. I don't need them, and nor do you!
