Merckx Corsa Extra sizing

Re:

Thats a nice find chrispy2001, you dont see that many of the Hitachi colour style about.
Dura Ace per chance?

Jamie

It's a 60 x 57.5 TT so should fit me quite nicely. The Hitachi paint scheme looks decent and overall the frame is in great shape, so I'm very happy with the purchase. I'll be building up with Dura-Ace 7400 on a set of Wolber Aspin, assuming I can find them relatively easily. My winter project has begun!

Re:

it's a belter!! if you've never seen it, try and get a copy of the 1988 world road race championships - it's one of the best races i've ever seen and not just for the final sprint either . .

I'll have a look for that. What's the rule of thumb regarding painting/leaving as is? Depends on the condition of the original?

that's something that i've been debating with myself since i bought the merckx frame. mine is battered to bits, chips everywhere, a small dent in the top tube, but i know that if i get it painted it will probably look a bit "fake" and over varnished like a lot of resprayed frames you see on ebay these days.

in the meantime, i'm enjoying it's well worn look. it's not a banger by any means, but a bit like it's owner, you can see it's been well worn!!

:?

Gapped on the 88 championships and totally forgot about the fence "incident" with Steve Bauer. Canada is a small country (population wise) and when I was in the bike biz I worked a fair amount with Steve. Always amazing seeing that footage and knowing I've riden with the person featured in it. Steve is still racing and can tear it up with people half his age. I'll have to send him a pic of the frame, he might have a good laugh (or not...).

Re:

i wouldn't have liked to have been in his time shoes at the end, i can tell you!! :?

it's such a shame as his pursuit of fondriest and criquelion to catch them in the finishing
straight, was the stuff of legend. there's no doubt in my mind that his legs were fast emptying when they started sprinting for the line and i'm sure we've all done things in the heat of the moment that we're not too proud of, but that's racing i guess!!

take a look at the chase from 14:10mins to the finish line - it's spectacular!!

what does he do these days? please pass on my best wishes when you contact him - he was one of my favourite riders back in the day 8)

That will be forever remembered for the fence 'incident' as you put it.
Regards painting, I always believe, and this is especially so with the Merckx, that unless its completly battered and has more metal showing than paint then its better with a bit of age showing. Though, this is just my opinion of course. Back home in Australia there is a guy in melbourne who does fantastic repaints of Merckx colour schemes and they are spot on. Most others I've seen, they have cut corners or used decals for the smaller colour changes. I seen one he did recently like Craigs 7/11 and each colour was layered up as per the original. Beautiful, time consuming and hence not cheap.
Up until the factory in Meisse closed about three or four years ago you could get a respray for less than a couple of hundred quid and decaled up with the original paint decal. The two painters in the factory must still be about somewhere.

Steve has had his hand in some Canadian semi-pro teams over the years (Spider-Tech being one) and is currently overseeing the construction of the velodrome being built for the 2015 Pan-Am Games happening here. Once a racer, always a racer.

I'm going to wait and see what the frame looks like before I make a decision on painting it. I'm torn because I would love to have it done up in 7-Eleven colours (speaking of Steve Bauer) but obviously don't want to wipe out a vintage 30 year old classic. Velocolour in Toronto is where I'd take and and they've done some nice frames over the years. Either way, it's wait and see at this point.
