Mercedes 300CE AMG

Re:

Not sure if this is as big of a problem in Europe, but in the US, the 1990-1995 models have been known to suffer from deteriorating wiring harnesses. Something about the wire insulation material not being up to snuff, Mercedes never officially recognized the issue, and many disgruntled owners. Most of the complaints that I've seen involve the gas powered cars, not the diesels. I've always admired the W124 coupe. My favorite quote from a car review at the time is "It looks like it's carved from a single block of unobtanium." Good luck with your search.

Heres my '500' - these have been far far cheaper to own and run (ignoring the obvious fuel costs) than a modern mondeo or VW or anything built in the last 12 years that I've had to use. They are easier to repair. Ok, age now says that parts that used to be off the shelf are on order but its usually only a day or two.

Its been replaced by a W210 300TD but again, so much less of a chore than anything else thats sat on my drive.

Re:

Apart from anything else, these older Mercs just feel incredible. There is a sense of permanence you rarely experience in an automobile. Then there is the hard back brochures you get when you join the Mercedes Owners Club. Tasteful.

Identical to my mates old one... we stuck dictator flags on it!!

I got to drive it down to Cornwall for his stag do.... oooooooh, lovely

They are 'different' to drive. It was never meant to hustle but could do if required. Merc found that their customers (in the 1970's) drove their Mercs faster and for longer distances than average so built in longevity and reliability into the W126 and the W201 (190e).

The best of these worlds must be the W124 which was built to the same standards. My friend only gave up on his 220CE at around 200,000 miles because of his growing family.
