Mech Hanger Thread Repair. Quick Simple And Cheap :)

After buying a 92 Zaskar LE I found that the mech hanger was badly twisted and the thread had to be shot. On removal of the mech I found that the last owner had bodged it with engineering putty. Looking at the hanger there was not enough metal to make using a helicoil viable so things looked dark. I had started to think of just how i could hold the frame on a milling machine (I used to be a CNC milling machinist and programmer) so I could cobble together a replaceable drop out system. Thinking of the cost of doing this would cost me more than the frame would ever be worth. Then after chatting in my local bike shop Grip Cycles good old John poped to his shelves and got me a I.D. drop out saver (I think that's the products name). So after a tweek to straiten the mech hanger out, i drilled out the old thread to 11.9 mm then pop in the steel top hat insert and fit mech. Total cost £6.30 and the Zaskar doesn't end up single speed. So if your scratching your head and don't want to go single speed you know what to do :D

Retrobike has its own Wiki for keeping useful info etc on. The thread explaining all is here. It can be accessed and changed by any member on the site.
