I have just acquired yet another bike. Its fitted with MA40 rims, which I thought were clincher rims, but is fitted with tubular tyres. So did MA40s come in both clincher and tubular versions? Or does it have the wrong tyres on it? Confused again.

If they have tubs on them, then they're definitely not MA40s!

Maybe someone managed to fit tubs onto them but MA40 are not tubular rims.

MA40 rims

yes they could have tubulars fitted..
Tufo make tubular clinchers and I think somebody else does.
or someone could have converted the clinchers to tubular with a kit...
But MA40 are clincher rims
GP4/GL330/GL280 are tubular rims

Hi buddy :-) Hate to state the obvious but, "just peel the tub back and see what's underneath" :-) As stated by some other members, GP4 are tubs and only tubs, MA40 are clincher and only clincher. Got both sets of rims twice over, been riding them since the 80's and they have never failed me.

Maybe someone threw them on just to get shut of the bike with tyres. Its possible to put the tubs on and blow them up, but wouldn't like to test rid it to find out LOL. Later buddy, Laz.

Mavic

forgive the intrusion on this thread but anyone know anything about Mavic MA50 CrD rims?, are they unusual? they never seem to be mentioned?

I've fitted Tubs to clincher rims in an emergency, I used tub tape stuck to the tub, so if inflated high enough they were good to get home on. Once was on a charity ride and some guy's clincher tyre exploded about 15 miles from the finish. I leant him a tub and rode next to him to ensure he didn't try any fast cornering due to chance of the tub rolling off. :D

As previously mentioned, the seller may just have put them on to get something on the rims.

Well they are definitely MA40s. Looks like the tubs were held on with evo stik.....looks like they've been on for years, but not much wear - just crumbly rubber. Binned now and new clinchers fitted - seem OK.
