After a clear out in my Dad's shed yesterday I've found a few bits and bobs and first up is this rim.

It was bought as part of a pair but I have no idea where the second rim is (f I could find it then I'd be getting a new pair of wheels built myself).

It's 32 hole and has the bronze finish, sticker is nice and tidy, I was concerned that there was some pitting but after a clean on a few points it looks like it will buff up nicely.

£40 posted in the UK. Price updated after a bit more market research[/b]

Then...

XT M730 cranks.

Great condition overall, I remember spending hours as a kid polishing these into a mirror finish. They have been in storage for maybe 12 years or so and are still tidy, would buff up well again with just a little elbow grease.

Problem is with the driveside extractor thread, the first half of the thread is damaged. They were like this back in the 90s when I bought them. all other threads and tapers are fine.

Yes, good point.

I guess I should have stated blemishes instead of pitting. Given that during the search I found an old XT rear mech that looks like it's been stored in a bag of sawdust there could have been all sorts of dust and debris floating around there from workshop projects over the years.

The jist of it is that the rim was bought new for a project that never happened, has never been built and would do an NOS restoration project proud.

Just had a pair of these built up Saturday, one NOS and one not - I could have had a NOS pair, your timing's atrocious! :P

The stunningest rims what ever there was so says I, with perhaps not enough thinking through... 8)

Aaagh! Pity that.

It is a great looking rim and I just wish I had another to go with it, instead I'm making do with some NOS Sun CR17s that have stayed together as a pair in the back of the shed.

Mmm, another of my favourites - also came in blue and red if I recall... 8)

The Suns I have are silver with some oxidisation of the finish which is starting to polish off ok. Nice rims but noticable heavier than the 230.

Tidy though and perfect for the front hub I have although I need a nice early 90s Shimano for the rear.

I have a perfect 230 TiB, 32h, never used, no blemishes, no pitting, perfect. It was NOS until I built it onto a not new but excellent HB-M738 front hub with db Alpina spokes and brass nipples. I haven't used it in any way, it hasn't even had a rim tape fitted.

I agree that it's a very nice looking wheel, especially with the gold label M738. I have been looking for a pair, but if I'm realistic I suppose I should be looking to sell it, as I doubt whether I could ever bring myself to use a wheel that is so perfect.

If either of you would like the wheel, please pm me with an offer.

anthony, thanks for the offer, I'll be building these wheels with non parallax hubs though :(
