That's their favourite excuse too (even though they've been independant for over 60 years).
I'm not condoning collonialism however India before British rule was far less structured than after. OK blame collonialism. However, many other former British collonies are now thriving following the leg-up of modernization they benefitted from (government administration, legal system, railways and ports infrastucture, sewage and public services, knowledge and technology transfer etc etc) and have diligently built on. Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong all decades ahead of India. Not to mention Canada, America, Australia, New Zealand and others. The leaders of those countries took the positives (yes there were negatives as well) from the British influence and used it as a springboard. India by contrast is a mess. The railways are in a shocking state, roads are utter chaos, peoples lives are not improving by anything like the rate of the other mentioned countries. Oh yeah let's blame the British so India needn't take responsibility for it's own hapless situation. 60 years on that's just a cop out.

I'm sick of the constant barrage of anti-British propaganda we've been subjected to over the past few years (particularly from the BBC of all places!)... yes, some things that were done in the name of the Empire were inexcusable but the blatantly obvious fact is that in the vast majority of cases the natives had a far better chance at life under the Empire than they otherwise would have had (or have had since.)
