Marin Zolatone Paint Update

Could be onto something Skinnyboy & Juice....may be the next step....the only sample i have though is attached to a frame.... :)

I've got a frame that needs repainting. I could easily get a sample off that if required? It's a 1991 Eldridge.

Shame it's so hard to track down. What a flattering response from the guys at Marin however.

I'd be inclined to see what samples of Matt Grey powdercoating you could come up with.

The cost wasn't really the issue...it was actually finding the correct paint in the first place....

IIRC WDPro had his Bear Valley powdercoated but to be honest, although it looked really good, it wasn't the same finish which is just so hard to find...

Any samples gratefully received....how will you remove a sample from the frame brocklanders?

The one I've got has a dodgy re-spray but it looks like it was straight over the Zolatone as there's grey poking out where the duff paint's peeling. Don't think it's be too hard to remove some of the top coat and peel off a bit of Zolatone. I'll have a look when I get chance.

Have you contacted the main coatings suppliers like PPG and ICI? If you can provide a sample it can be spectro analysed to give the formula and finish type.

Shame Im off work at the moment as I work in the Paint process department at a Vauxhall , and I have to test paint samples from reps of the above companies who are based at the plant. Its going to be at least 6 weeks before I could get in touch with them unless I can email them a picture of a bike.

The man in right :D Its a hard finish to reproduce :?

Mine was the dark finish and if I really wanted something that looked similar I might have been tempted to go down the route of non stick frying pan coatings - very similar to look at but easier to wash the mud off  Front mech mounting may be a problem though

WD :D

When I bought my First proper MTB - a Marin palisades trail, it came with two little bottles of paint. One was fluoro yellow, ther other was the zolatone paint. Wonder where those 2 bottles are now..

Yes, my BV just came with the dark zolotone but dads came with the light zolotone and fluo yellow 8)

If you let the bottles stand it separated into layers.

DegsUK....i could try to take a photo of the finish but to be honest it is best seen in the fresh from a sample....which i'll have to try and obtain...sounds like another promising option though so thanks, i'll probably be in touch

WDPro....amazing build by the way....attention to detail just astounded me :)

If anyone finds one of those paint sample bottles i'll pay hansomely for it!!
