Manitou Three rebuild issues

I'm trying to rebuild a set of Answer Manitou Three forks. I can't get the adjuster caps to budge. The manual says to unscrew them by hand. But that's not happening. I don't see any way to get a tool on them without wrecking them. Any advice?

Another issue is that the threaded fitting at the bottom of one of the compression rod has come loose so now it just spins round and round when you put a screw in it. You can actually just pull it out of the rod. Is there a recommended method to fix this? Can I just epoxy it back in? Will that hold?

The stanchions are clamped into the crown, slacken the 2 screws both sides then unscrew the caps. The clamp screws slightly crimp the legs making the threads tight for the caps. At least they do on mine and no, I haven't overtightened the screws.

There is not a lot to grip but try a water pump pliers or mole grips, I'd perhaps wrap a little tank tape around the caps to keep any damage down to a mimimum.

Thanks for the advice. I thought about loosening those screws, but decided not to, as I don't have a torque wrench and it seemed to me that getting the right torque on those was particularly important. And the manual recommends not messing with them if you don't have to. But I'm probably being overcautious. And for all I know, the previous owner may have overtightened them anyway.

if you just slacken the top clamp screw thats usually enough to
hold the stancion to get the top cap off
and yes to the waterpump pliers ,sadly the only way to get a grip
masking tape on the cap might stop any damage

dont be too shy of dis-assembling them completley they will probably need it ,and you dont really need a torque wrench ,just a bit of feel
