having just moved into my new house with my lovely girlfriend (i choose the house because of the mancave) I have looked around for a worktop to suit - it already has fittings in place, i just need the worktop - where is a best place to pick up such thing? I have thought about using an old door as a worktop.

Needs to be about 100" X 30" preferably, and can take a few hammer blows etc

Offcuts from a kitchen fitters, or worktops they've removed to install a new one maybe?

Perhaps a trip to the local tip - though not sure if you're allowed to dispose of this sort of stuff.

My local Homebase had huge uncut kitchen worktops which had cosmetic damage for a tenner, might be worth checking out your local DIY stores for the same.

Ikea bargain corner , or if you can wait a few weeks you can have a whole kitchen .

A mate of mine drives for one of the builders merchants, he said they chuck away loads of worktops. So you could try asking a driver at somewhere like Wikes.

Local recycling, or failing that a skip?

When I was studying in Manchester we used a security door screwed into the wall with a couple of hooks and chains as a dual desk. Never knowingly pay for anything.

I glued 5@ 8"x2" together.
Makes for a good solid top and at 2" thick isnt likely to bend no matter what you put on.
Substitute would be an office fire door.Solid birch with a ply coating, make sure its not one of the hollow internal doors :?
