Morning chaps
Just bought a little Kona Koa for mucking about in the woods...I fancy trying to build some trials skills..ha ha...with my sense of balance that might take some time.
Anyway, was thinking about putting some Magura rims brakes on it, but I have little knowledge of the different models. Am I right in thinking
HS33 are the classics but a bit fiddly to set up
Latest generation are more powerful, easier to set up, but the new levers arn't as good as the previous.
Which would you go for...various on Ebay at the moment but really want to wait for cheaper 2nd hand items.
Cheers
Carl

Basically, all Maguras use the same slave pistons with differences in finish and mounting options. The levers vary from model to model. The HS33 levers use a smaller piston than the other models, which gives more power and less pad travel. Newer HS33s have a redesigned lever with the pad wear adjuster in a different position, and a different lever shape. I actually prefer the newer levers, but it's just a question of taste.

The "EVO" adapters of the older HS33 and other models brace the brake mount directly against the frame, while the newer "EVO2" mounts are self contained. That makes them easier to set up.

Used prices are quite high, and you never know quite what abuse they've suffered at the hands of trials kids. I reckon it makes sense to buy new.

Go for the old HS33, as you say a bit fiddly to set up but once you've got 'm right they are just the best (zero maintance) and the levers of the new HS33 SUCK BIG TIME indeed!! ruined them on my first trip
Good luck with the TRIALS, it wil improve your skills at low and high speed a lot. A lot of patience required though but very rewarding in the end
cheers Roy

ps

go for red compound pads (or the special clear/white monty or Koxx ones)...
or stick some Coke (cola... ) on your rims like we used to do bitd...

What happened?
Bike fell sideways, no rotating handle bars!! used the old type's HS33 for many many years without problems. Also a friend of mine, who is a sponsored TRIAL/Show riders has allready ruined 4 of the new levers!
3 on the clamp and one on the clamp/lever connection..... I'll try to find some NOS black old type HS33 levers for my bike for sure!!

£45-50 will get you a set, I've bought two sets off here and one on eBay and all they have needed is bleeding. Like someone else said, the HS33's have a slightly bigger cylinder which means more oil/more pressure = harder stopping.

I've got some HS22's that have been on my Pace for 12 years and on my Saracen for 4 years before that, all I've ever done is fit new pads. Grey pads are best all round, Green Frog for wet mud and red ones for better stopping power (but they wear fast).

Ancient HS22's >>>>> :D

I don't think that the later HS33 (Evo2) brakes are any more powerful than the original "Evolution" ones - they both use the same slave cylinders anyway.
I personally prefer the early levers ( the adjusters are easy to use with gloves on too) and second the advice about using the red pads for slow technical type riding. Much better than the standard black compound (especially in the wet) in my experience.
