Bear with me, I'm still finding my feet...

what exactly are people talking about when talking about lugs? They seem to be used to date a bike but I'm not sure what is being talked about.
Searching for enlightenment... :?

cheers

Lugs are the little metal collars that make up the junctions of the frame tubes - the tubes fit inside them and are fixed in place.

Lugs are usually not made by the frame builder but are bought in from an outside manufacturer like Nervex or Prugnat. The designs can be quite distinctive, and some frame builders liked to add their own embellishments -Hetchins went down a particularly baroque route for instance http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/hetchins.html ...

there are so many variations pf themes some nice plain ones right up to really decorated ones , that show the workmanship used to make a lug never mind the whole bike .
