Loose crank

I presume there is some sort of taper but the XTR cranks use a ocatlink bb that is only XTR compatible, no square tapers involved on my dads setup :?

:? what? cranks that don't have a square taper? what trickery is this? :?

If you don't know what you are talking about then don't comment, as proved by the above 3 posts.

That crankset is not a square taper style , it fits on to hollow axle Octalink V1 type bottom bracket.

Really need to see pictures of the back of the crank arm and the end of the BB to be able to diagnose why they are coming loose.

Easy tiger! This is retrobike not singletrack....

I'll comment when I think I can help.
So you know it's not a square taper, good on ya
but there's no need to be so damn rude to those who don't share your superior knowledge

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sorry about the confusion, it is an octalink bb. Should have pointed that out, doh! But the wear of the bb splines due to riding on the cranks when loose could be a factor and I think a bb swap is going to be the next move. I will give it a go and let you know if it makes a difference.

I don't think I said anything about me having "superior knowledge" - just because you don't know what you're talking about isn't my fault. ➡️

The aluminium of the crank will be a lot softer than the steel axle, if the splines are damaged then i would expect it to be the crank arm rather than the BB.

Any pictures?

I have the same problem and posted a similar q a few weeks ago. Answers were it is probably the crank arm, not the bb, but try lactate on the bolts before shelling out on a new crank arm.

Hopefully there is a solution that does not involve a new crank arm.

Make sure you have the correct BB. Shimano changed the length of the splines part way through the "grey" XTR phase because they were too short and cranks were coming loose. Hopefully yours hasn't that problem. I'm struggling with the night before at the moment so my brains not straight but someone else might be able to tell you.
