Brief googling confirms that long-sightedness is the inability to focus on close-up objects..

But how close is close-up??

Is the inability to focus on things @ 6" considered long-sighted??

I was told I was long sighted about 30 years ago, when I couldn't easily read a book a foot awy from my face, but it wasn't anything to worry about. I have just started wearing specs, and a right rip off they are too!

The definitions haven't changed..

Long sighted you can see clearly at distance
Short sighted you can see clearly close-up.

Mr.Burgundy, there is a cure for getting old but it's a bit. . .erm . . final

My eyesight has deterioated very quickly over the last 3 years. Need glasses for VDU stuff at work. The optican said it was to do with my age too.

Apparently from approx age 40, the lens goes through some changes that finish after a few years.. this is why long-sightedness is quite common in the over 40's. . .

Guess I'm quite lucky - from age 16 to 35 I was up close and personal with computer screens, mostly on 12 hour shifts...
