Local powdercoating comedy..

Wondering if I should just nitromors the Avalanche frame myself.. can't get anyone local to strip it for a decent price..

Only want it coated white so, Nitromors first, then £20 for powdercoating 8)

The process is something like give it a good ol' coating in the evening and chuck it in a bin liner 'til morning.. then get with the scraper(s) and toothbrush (I'll use hers... not mine ;) ) isn't it??

I reckon the tern sand blasting has become generic. Think of the damage sand paper can do a frame and then think of the speed and pressure of the sand...

yep , pretty sure the correct term is media blasting . I knew a guy that had his own company , his other half had a small cabinet that she used to create frosted glass . A mate had her do us some coasters with pictures of vw campers on them . He owned a lot of land so didn't really take it all that seriously , whenever we needed stuff doing he would put it in with some other stuff he was doing , the only request was that it was thoroughly cleaned , any trace of grease can really gum up the equipment and is a hassle to clean out .

Don't worry about it . Just make sure to mention that your stuff is a bit delicate and they will use a media more suited to the material .

Maybe its not all bad living up North - the powder coater I use charges me £15 a frame and they always come back looking perfect... last time I went in I hadn't even stripped the original paint off, they blasted it first and the grand total was no more than thirty quid.

Be careful who you use to blast your frames. There's loads to take into consideration. The same aluminium grit used to make sandpaper is commonly used and is not great for paper-thin tubes. You also wouldn't want anyone firing aluminium grit into a ti or steel frame either.

Best to use somewhere sympathetic to bike frames. I recently had a titanium frame glass-bead blasted and went right out of my way to use a place that does loads of work for F1 and specialises in surface treatments. Their workshop looked like a laboratory and their work was meticulous.

Now we're talking. . . local place (about 10 miles away), I emailed for a quote last week...

Dear Ian,

The cost for us to shotblast and powder coat your bicycle frame in white will be £35.00.

If you have any problems please give us a call at the office

Yeah.. the use a Beretta Silver Pigeon... apparently it's ideal for al frames..

but I needed to make sure so asked. .

Dear Ian,

Aluminum oxide blast media will give a fairly smooth finish and not wreck the frame.

That is a bargain really  makes my argos cycles klein linear blue look like a re-mortgage job
