Hi guys,

Well... came home tonight and picked up my cogset and other stuff from the bike shop and thought: Hey let's mount it on my KLEIN and set it up. Got everything on and now I'm stuck with a problem:

The rear will either shift up OR down... not both. Well, eventually both in a way that if you wait long enough, the chain will finally drop a cog down. Mostly either the first 3 lowest gears or either the first 3 highest gears will work normally, after that: nothing (up or down, so if it goes down it don't shift up and if it goes up it won't shift down over the remaining cogs).

I was under the impression that with thumbshifters the whole purpose is "click, shift" but now I have to use two clicks mostly to get a gearshift... as if I was using rubber band for a cable

Anybody know what this could be? Or what else I could check besides cable-tension? Maybe the rear mech is faulty? I did adjust the screws to get it even with the smallest and largest cog. And I tried another cassette with no avail... even shortened the chain a couple of links. Up front it's no problem, just the rear won't shift with one click  :(

Any help (as far as possible from my text) would be appreciated! I never had these problems with rapidfire shifters (well, once but that was a badly assembled/mixed cassette). Thumbies should be even easier to setup right??

Is there a kink in the cable inner somewhere where it passed through a section of outer? or maybe the inner just needs a bit of lube? It sounds like the cables either not tight enough or not sliding freely.... unless the spring on your mech's duff, but I'd only really expect that to affect it moving down accross the cogs (i.e. big to small)

It does sound like the cable isn't moving freely, it's the first place to look.

It does sound cable related.

Remove the cable & blast wd40 through the outers using the straw that comes with the can, which just happens to fit inside an outer cable!

If the inners look in any way corroded bin 'em, if they look good keep em & refit the cables, problem should be solved.

Cool, I was just thinking about that...

Since it's a KLEIN there is a whole teflon outer running through the tubes. And I just looked at the WD-40 and thought "Hmmm... maybe spray that in".

Will try that and see if anything improves. Thanx for the help so far (of course I will make a note here if that solved it).

drop it to the small cog on the cassette, lift the back wheel up and move the mech with ya thumb up and down if it moves ok it`s ya cable,so grease it,stick the shifter in friction and move up and down the gears, when working put it back in index and adjust it up.

try without a wheel does it move ok ?

a bit of grease underneath the BB solved it for me as recommended by sheldon .

just a quick check - is this all shimano 7sp hyperglide and shimano thimbies?

Or is it mix/match suntour/8sp/freewheel etc? Might be a cog spacing issue.

you shouldn't run the liners all the way through the frame as they cause cable drag. only put short pieces (10cm max.) over the inner cables where they exit the frame so that they dont cut into the frame. 2-3cm outside of the frame and the rest inside of the frame. they will stay in place, dont worry.

use the long liners only to mount new cables and then pull them out and mount the short liners. before you pull the old cable remove the short liners and push the long liner over the cable until it sticks out at the entry hole. it helps to grab both inner cable and liner and then pull the inner cable to guide the liner through the entry hole. sounds more complicated than it is... have a Grolsch first and relax ;)
