Great photos Ian!

What was the thinking behind using bullhorns without tri bars? Wasn't the aero effect of ordinary drops any use?

As a short aside....... when did it become legal to use tri-bars? In my day you were only allowed 3 points of contact with the bike: feet, bottom and hands (the 1970's that is)

Tri-bars weren't legal for use in TT's at that date. I think they became 'legal' in '91 (or close to 91 anyway). This also answers Midlife's question. I don't know if anyone turned up at an event and tried to use them before this date but if they had they would probably have been refused as the rules then dictated that 'brake levers should be accessible from the normal riding position' which of course they aren't on tri-bars. This was a knee-jerk reaction ruling dating back to Alf Engers fitting his brake levers behind the top of his bars in around '76?

Blimey, I bet that was a handful on a windy Borobridge / A1 "25" :)

Also an illegal combination of wheels for CTT time trials. I don't think full disc fronts have ever been 'legal' but possibly they were for a very short time when they first came out before it was realised how potentially dangerous they could be in windy or heavy traffic conditions. Ultra deep front wheel rims are also 'illegal' for very similar reasons.
