Hello,

My laptop has stopped turning on! It sounds like it's trying to fire up, but then just switches off again. If you leave it alone it just keeps repeating the process....any ideas? The last time I used it it turned itself off a couple of times and when it switched itself back on it wanted to start in safe mode. Now it won't go at all....is it dead? :(

When you switch it on does it even flash up the manufacturer's logo?

If not then it's fairly dead, yes but if it does but Windows won't start then there are steps you can take to recover it such as "Press F something to enter setup" that kind of thing. Are you able to get into the BIOS to get it to boot from CD before it tries the hard drive? If you can and you have a system recovery disk that's a good place to start.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert though so please don't sue me if it all goes horribly wrong!

Pop the battery out for a minute and put it back in and try again.

My work laptop does this every so often, but then its also got various bits rattling about inside too, and sometimes I need to give it a good 'etcha-sketch shake' to bring it to life

No, it doesn't show anything on the screen, just the power light comes on then goes out again and the light with a lightening flash next to it flashes yellow.

Sorry, this is no help to Barney Rubble, but that's my PMSL of the week....... :P

<edit> The memory will probably be under a secre on cover on the bottom of the machine...........once that's off, look at the sides of the memory modules- there's a catch which releases them- they'll probaly be at an angle and flip upright and become looser and can be removed.

google the make and model

Went through the HP guided troubleshooting, got this brilliant diagnosis:

DIAGNOSIS: The most likely cause of the ISSUE is a defective notebook.

CORRECTIVE ACTION: Service the unit In Accordance With the notebook entitlement.

So helpful!

This is what the bottom looks like. I've taken off the only obvious flap and there is a chip covered in paper with intel written on it, so I'm assuming that's not the memory?

Shall I take the whole back off? Or shall I find someone who knows what they are doing?
