Need a new laptop. Just for browsing web, bit of word/excel and storing our music on. no gaming, no programming etc.

Seen this one on eBay - brand new - anyone got any thoughts? Or other recommendations. There's a fair few of you computer wizards on the forum. Let me know what you think.

My budget is £300

If you have a big Tesco near you, pop in and there should be quite a few options at that price all similar.
Have a play and see if you like the screen/keyboard and trackpad. That's the main points to look for in a laptop once you have a price point. Something you cannot do on ebay.

or depending on you real use, netbooks may even work for you. (i.e just slight word/excel usage, nothing heavy

I recently got to try using a friend's netbook (Samsung NC10) and was surprised by how usable the keyboard and screen were.

Since then, I've been entertaining the idea of buying a netbook to run some flavour of Linux on it. Dell even sell a netbook with Ubuntu pre-installed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Netbook_Edition

my mrs netbook is ok
not too fast though but it does have windows 7

erm at that price you could get a pretty good laptop
possibly look at refurbed ones for a slightly better deal (if your not fussed about that)

dual core is always good
but always have a look at the bus speed (fsb) of the processor

NC10 is a class machine if you want a Netbook i had the NC10 and now got the NC10+ i find the NC10+ and Windows 7 Starter are not worth having though very slow OS on netbook and would if going to have a windows based os on it have XP on and will when i get round to sorting my own out

well mine is 1066 MHz

i thought it was 800 mhz

average laptop is 400mhz
id say 800 is pretty snappy though
i personally wouldt go less than that
but that may be a case of once ive seen better i wouldnt go back

i reckon 400 is outdated :?

and as above, go for xp for now
mrs has a toshiba nb200 which is very good
but windows starter is sooo slow
also, if you got that hp one
you may be able to get splashtop which is a linux quickboot option
i have it but dont use it
very handy for speedy startup though

To be honest the lowest processor I'd go is Core 2 Duo, even though right now you say you only want web browsing & light office use at that price point you can get C2D - which gives you the power should you need it in the future...
