Laptop connection probs

Hi, just got a laptop off LGF (thanks mate) finally sorted the wireless connection, it says connected and it has an excellent signal. The problem is it wont connect to the internet, any ideas?

That excellent connection is likely to be the connection between your modem and your computer.
the connection to the internet goes from the bt[or whoever] socket to the modem.I think you need to check that too.
Are all the correct lights 'lighting up' on the modem display?
Do you have a filter fitted ?and is it fitted the right way around?

The modem is working fine my desktop and the Mrs's laptop which is wireless connect fine, its just the new laptop which cannot connect depite saying its connected to my wireless network with an ecxellent signal?

Is your wireless network hiden? if so try this. Go into wireless network properties and tick the connect even if the network is not broadcasting box. Then disconnect and reconnect to the internet.

Which laptop is is and what Wi-Fi router are you using (I assume both are setup as standard).

It could be a missmatch in security as that sometimes happens where it says it's connected but actually it's locked out from pretty much everything. Can you see the other computer and vice versa in the network area. (though not always a useful test a more useful one is to ping the other computer)

Do you use MSN/Windows Live ?

Or it maybe something like software blocking access and the new 'network' needs to be allowed through.

The Laptop is a Dell and the router is a Belkin.

How do I look for the other computers in the network?

When we got our other laptop I set the router up using the supplied disc on the desktop then all I had to do with the laptop was find the network and enter the password and it worked straight away?

Go looking for which Dell it is, ok found LGF sale thread,
so we have

DELL Latitude D505 - XP Pro, CD ROM, 512RAM, 1.6 GHz Centrino, 40GB HDD

Built in wifi (found about 10 wireless networks, 3 unsecured!)

no known faults - software has not been reloaded so there might be some chuff left over from previous owner.

I'd reinstall myself, is there and XP Product Key sticker on the bottom of the laptop ?

If standard it should be a b/g modem (Intel Wireless 2000)
Is it connecting though the Intel software or WindowsXP standard. If possible disable the Intel software for now.

You sure you are typing in the correct password ?

P.S. a good way to kick start things is to install the drivers as it clears most things out with little hassle
