hmmm, "bad work"? I've seen much worse.

Guess it speaks well of your work when all of it can be set to the high standard established by your other work. This isn't perfection, but it's far from bad, for what it is.

Girlonbike, care to share some of your work, painted, not anodized? Seems like you might have some great stuff to show 8)

Sure, you'll have to hire me to see my work. I do not earn my keep as a professional or semi-professional bike painter. And, thank you. :D

I don't have to be an actor to form an opinion on whether I think an actor gave a good performance. I wonder how painting bike parts got to be so special?

Girlonbike, I have to have some idea of what I would be hiring, no?

Grounddoggy, I've heard that argument before, but it helps to have some expertise on a subject, so that your opinion carries a bit more weight. If not an actor, you should at least be a film buff. But, nothing beats first hand knowledge of the craft.

As for painting bikes/parts, it can be special, but not always

Just my two cents, but it looks like John painted these just for fun to see how they would match with the frame, can't recall him painting cranks in general. The paint won't last long anyway .......... assuming this will go on a Klein that will get ridden
Yep, I'm sure these were a test piece. jonrock has painted a couple of pairs, another I saw were flawless... but I think they have already been sold.

These would still look good once installed, and you wouldn't even notice the different fades. I've seen worse on dolomite forks straight out of the Klein factory!

this.

If they were test pieces, he should have stripped and tried again. That's how a lot of professionals operate. They don't release test products, work product or prototypes for money.

I remove the rings to clean my cranksets, I think you should remove the rings to paint them too. I know the fade wouldn't be quite right but judging from his work, he is talented enough to pull it off.

I'm not trying to bag on the guy but it's odd that I have to defend myself by presenting parts that I have painted or anodized myself to justify and speak of an opinion I have in the matter. I am also not a film buff but know that Keanu Reeves can't act for shit.

Objectively, without knowing the dude, the cranks are not well painted. That's it. I'm not challenging his skills as a painter or qualities as a man.

Why defensive? You were critiquing someone's work; offering your opinion, as is your right, and I was merely stating my opinion, that your opinion seemed unnecessarily harsh, unless you really have a high standard, and in that case, it is understandable. So, I asked for some info/examples of yours, or someone else's (if you have none of your own), by which you judge all work. For example- I love the american handmade bike show, and that seems to be everyone's finest work on display, and yes, this falls short of that. But again, why be defensive; I was being genuine when asking about your work, since you brought it up, in the first place. Also, your new here, (welcome!), and I'm sorry I'm not familiar with you, (hope I don't have to use a blushing emoticon when you turn out to be some awesome person that I dare not know), so just looking for more info- that's all.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that you were judging Jon's "qualities as a man", lolwut.

Anyway, not a big deal. I'm sure Jon can come on here, and set the record straight, if he so desired.

Regarding Keanu Reeves, he was great in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure; though Ben Kingsley he is not. Some things are more obvious than others 8)

Peace :)

You're right. I was offering my opinion on the cranks in question. You were offering an opinion about my opinion. Not exactly the same thing.

I'm not actually defensive but if somebody is going to call me out as harsh, I feel the need to answer.

You do not have to be sorry that you're not familiar with me. I'm new and happy being unfamiliar. 8)

I'm not sure why you want me to offer some sort of benchmark for which I gauge excellence in the craft of bike painting but it's like porn, I can't define it but know it when I see it.
