Kona prices

Retrobike Rider
£105 on eBay yesterday bought a 96 Explosif frame in popular size, triple-butted P2s, Control Tech headset, Velocity stem, looks-like titanium Titec bar, Bontrager bar ends and some kind of bb.

Those bits have a value, so it makes the frame itself pretty cheap. A few weeks ago, a 97 Kilauea frame sold for £86 including a Pace RC36, LX cranks and a pair of wheels, more recently a 95 Kilauea failed to sell at £62. People pay more than that for a stem.

Does anybody agree that Konas seem to be worth less these days than they used to be? Have they ceased to be cool I wonder?

bundles always sell less well

he'd have got a similar amount for the bare frame.

if values are softening though, it could well be down to retro bikers moving up to more boutique brands, and less people coming in to fill the gap

falling kona prices suit me, i'm a buyer not a seller.

I thought it was pricey personnaly, but i was only interested in the frame.

I considered it too much to spend on frame and forks for a hack; and judging from the additional pictures the seller emailed me, it wasn't in good enough condition for a proper build (IMO).

I was working from the premise that I would need to respray it at a cost of around £120, so despite its exisiting colour being desirable this was not relevant. Also the fact that it was Columbus rather than Tange was less appealing, although admittadly that was completely irrational :D

So around £200 for a nice Explosif frame is actually 2/5 of a nice Hei Hei frame

Yes, but an Explosif is a pretty high-class 'hack'.

Anyways I'd reckon the frame cost about £50-£60 out of that £105 and you don't have to go to Argos for paint - Bob Jackson Cycles charge £65 and have a very good reputation I believe - I may be able to vouch for it myself sometime soon.

But my point was that I'm sure Explosifs used to cost more than £50-60.

I think interesting well presented ones still do, I think I saw the auction you won and the photo did nothing to help the sale.

& as has been said, bundled parts tend to go cheap.

Still nice buy you got there.

Apologies - just to clarify, I should have said '£105 bought somebody a ...'. If it was my size, I would have bought it though, and unlike Tallpaul I'd have been willing to pay a bit more.

That Explosif frame retailed frame only for £399.00

Good buy (if its in ok condition!)

If not £499 even? I'm sure the Kilauea was £399 (at least in 1997 anyways)

I think the 1996 and 1997 frames were basically the same. Both Explosif and Kilauea were in Columbus Nivachrom, but the Kilauea used Cyber which is round tubes and the Explosif was in Max, which has bi-ovalised top and down tubes.

I remember they were 1994/1995 prices I think..

Cindercone you could get frame only for £229.00. Maybe Kileaua was £349 and Explosif was another fifty. STIF I think used to advertise them in their double spread.

You can get a frame single colour powder coated for £30.00. My mate just had his Caldera done - nice job too. Gil provided the decals (Cheers Gil!).
