Appreciate it’s not a directly linked to this thread but it’s likely the best place to ask.

I’ve just noticed that my 97 Ku (orange one) has the decals straight onto the paint with no lacquer. I’m confident the decals and paint are original. So were these not lacquered? Or was it colour dependent… since it’s non metallic.


My 98 Green ku has the decals under the lacquer as expected.

Can't help with the 97 but, to fill in a couple of gaps, on my '96 it is under the lacquer and on a '99 frame it is also under.

My 97 frame has a bit of history to it. Being supplied from Kona whilst someone waited for a warranty replacement

Update Dec-24

His friendship is the greatest legacy he leaves us with but we must not forget the incredible resources and knowledge that he documented locally and shared here on retrobike, not least the Kona serial numbers and related information.

I continue to administer the work he started and spend an hour a week updating the lists with any new entries or confirmed...

The '96 is an original one-off lightning scheme , the '99 is a mustard yellow, similar to the '98 Kilauea.

It seems to be random which are lacquered and not over the decals. Even Hots are the same it seems.
