If you're going down the repaint route I wouldn't go with the stars and bars. I think it would be a PITA to replicate accurately and would certainly be very expensive.

Did Kona actually call this paint scheme the "stars and bars?" I ask because the American flag is called the stars and stripes, stars and bars refers to the confederate flag from the U.S Civil War.

Steven

They did indeed but I don't know the story behind it.

That is surprising as the stars and bars remains very controversial, particularly among black Americans. During the civil rights era the Klu Klux Klan would commonly fly the confederate flag. I think it has lost some of its negative symbolism as it becomes more of a Southern pride banner. But as I said not for the decedents of slaves.

Interesting didn't know this.

Strange to use it if it has this meaning.

I think if it's a rider leave it.. If it's going to get built shinny, pushed in and out of the garage and around the block then get it painted. Let's be fair, riders can get pinged at any point and your back to square one but now with an expensive and none original paint job ;)

True I think keep as it is and touch up paint where needed.

I remember seeing that on the forum before, i think if it were me i would have to get it repainted and the dents filled to be completely satisfied with it. Doesnt look to me like a fairly coplicated paint job to replicate. I think asthetics are everything on a frame like this :)

Sean

I am unsure repaint , found out this was ex team racers custom frame and forks.

So not sure if can bring myself to strip paint off.

If it's ex-team race colours, then stick with it I reckon. Save the money towards a dream spec for the build ;)

Cheers

Yeah think it s best to keep it as it is and touch it if find a good match.

Hi

I would also say keeping it as is would be the Best ...Currently finishing off my Kona Hot 1994 which I got in Original Grey which I thought looked a tad boring and a few scapes but now that the build is nearly finished I am really happy that I left the original colour.
Worse case you build it and wish you had sprayed it then you can strip it and respray it and start again  :)

Since I recieved my Hot already in a non original pukey green colour, I opted to have mine powder coated a beautiful deep blue metallic. Turned out quite nice and I fancy the colour. Powdercoating is slightly more robust than paint and about 1/3 to 1/4 the price of a pro paint job in my region. Either way looking forward to the thread.
