Kona Hei Hei BB Issue - Updated with bad news!

Hi All. I picked up my Hei Hei this week and it is awesome, the build is coming on. But, I have an issue with the bottom bracket. Firstly, the sides of the BB on the frame are tapered, not square like my other bikes. Will this affect fitment of a standard(in this case Tune Sixpack) BB? Next issue is that at some point(not sure if it is standard) it has some sort of water drain plug fitted, but it appears to be in the middle of the BB threads. The Tune BB requires the use of all the threads, so what can I do about it? Could I tap over the drain plug somehow? Thanks, Steve

Yes, the taper allows for the use of the Mavic BB, but the threads will accommodate your standard Tune BB just fine. In regard to the drain/plug I would tap right over it. If that process weakens it at all I'd remove it as it should have no structural implications on the BB shell.

I'd actually go ahead and remove the drain/plug anyway since it won't be doing any draining with the BB cup threaded over it.

Thanks guys. So was the Hei Hei designed for the Mavic BB or has it been retro fitted with one?

I may just tap over the drain plug, I dont want to be left with a hole and besides half of it will be draining!

Yeah Dave and its is in such good condition. I am just waiting to order my cranks then it will be built up and posted. Couple of weeks I reckon. Cheers for sorting me out with it!

The BB shell was probably milled at the factory to be compatible with the Mavic BB. I think facing a titanium BB shell after the fact would be a significant pain in the arse, but I suppose it's possible.

Well as long as it works with the tune its fine. The tune end plate will sit slightly inside the tapered section but they will sit straight and true I hope. I am having to get it to the bike shope so they can tap the threads so I'll know next week sometime.
