Kona Hei Hei BB Issue - Updated with bad news!

UPDATE

So guys being having real issues with this Hei Hei frame. The shop has tried to fit the Tune Bottom Bracket, but because of the taper the cups screw "inside" the frame slightly, meaning they are now less than 68mm apart. This preloads the bearings too much and the BB locks up. Noahs Ark have spoke about getting the BB "reshelled" at Argos cycles but I'm not sure that will work. I was thinking of machining a X Type BB spacer with the exact same taper. Then this would "fill" the gap and I could fit the Tune BB. Do you guys think this would work? My only concern is this issue of having accuratly faced BB shells to make the BB work well, I dont think I could guarentee a perfectly parrallel facing but would this matter?

Hope you can help, I really want to make this Tune BB work.

The taper Q is a bit of a head scratcher………

The x type BB spacer may be the answer – but machined to the same diameter as the outside of the BB shell or slightly larger.

Like this (not to scale):

Then at least the bb would be about 68mm apart.

I had a DMR chain tensioner that used to be held like this and the small offset (circa 2mm) didn’t cause a problem.

Possible?

Actually thats not a bad idea. The non drive side would sit slightly within the shell, and the dirveside with the spacer would sit 2mm ouside the shell. It may actually balance out, with the non driveside sitting 2mm inside the shell. It would just mine a 2mm move to the right of the bike with the BB but that shouldn't affect anything.

My idea was to get two of those spacers, and machine them to an exact fit of the taper within the BB shell, then just put the BB in as normal with the modified spacers filling the tapered gap. Your idea seems much simpler though. I'm going to show it to an engineering friend in the morn so I'll let you all know.

Yeah I was pointed towards a Mavic BB, but I really want to make the TUne BB work with this frame. I'm sure I can get it to fit, anything will fit if you try hard enough!
